LA DOLCE VITA

I've finally managed to source a DSLR here in Italy so I'll be getting back to some Speedhunting this week as I try to uncover some cool cars and tuning shops. I ran across this 1962 Fiat 1100 yesterday in the picturesque town of Bassano Del Grappa. Parked up against a beautifully restored house it all looked like something out of an old Italian movie. I'll be back with more from Italy soon!

JDMST END OF MONTHLY GATHERING

Arriving to the area, the main intersection which entered the carpark was backed up about 200m up the main highway. It was complete chaos.

The local JDMST has been a meet going on for well over 12 months now, starting out from about 10-15 cars and progressing into something unbelievably large. This time the meet changed from my local area over to the Northern side of the CBD. A shopping centre which accommodated around 125 carparks was completely overflowed to the lower levels which filled over 250 spaces.

After we finally found a vacant park we took a walk, spotting Chris Pang's S15 which was looking pristine as always.

The slammed, blue 350Z was something new...

...my draw instantly dropped after I took a closer look. The Work VS-KF's sat perfectly in the rear guards. One of the lowest cars on the scene.

Moving to the undercover carpark I was blown away how many cars and people there were. There was not 1 vacant spot.

A good friend of mine by the name of Flynn has his PS13 for the first time in months, alongside it is Nathan's PS13, don't they look great together?

It's always good to see AE86's out as there aren't too many in the scene.

As the night went on, Police ended up making an appearance so many cars avoided the roof level and headed underneath.

This R34 GT-R was nothing short of style. Standard wing raised and 19" Volk TE37's.

One thing about the JDMST meets is they always attract the Honda boys. The group is growing rapidly and the are continuously bringing out outstanding cars.

Josh Maher's red EK was a perfect example in my eyes...

...just as pure in the interior just as the exterior.

A nice example of a Integra on BBS Mesh.

This EK Sedan was definitely the lowest car at the meet. The Work Equip 01's were fitted that same afternoon, and as you can see it required some serious guard work!

I spotted this little white EK Hatch right up the back by itself...

...Which was sitting low on a set of gold-centred SSR Mesh.

You may be wondering what these black bra type things are on the front? They are to protect the bonnet and windscreen from any rocks.

Emilio Brown's Civic was looking very respectable.

I love these exhausts the Honda guys put on their cars. Emilio recently fitted these new SSR Professor MS1R's on the car...

The 16x8.5 +14's compliment the rear guards perfectly.

Just as I was leaving I noticed this deep, purple-maroon Sedan which looked very clean...

...sitting on a a full set of, you guessed it, BBS Mesh.

The night was sponsored by Nandos Grilled Chicken, Sushi Train and Pizza Capers and gave everyone a 10% discount on dinner. I can gladly say this was the biggest and best JDMST I think anyone has attended so far.

Hyundai Avante soon to get launched in India


Some unconfirmed news are coming out stating that Hyundai are planning to launch their globally accepted sedan Elantra in the Indian automobile field as Hyundai Avante. Few Years ago, Hyundai India have launched a sedan Elantra, but it was a major flop. This new Hyundai Avante in India looks rich in style, great in it's performance, comfort, features and full value for money.

This new luxurious sedan, Hyundai Avante is powered by a 1591cc, DOHC, CVVT Petrol engine which will provide a maximum power of about 118 Bhp @ 6200 rpm and a maximum torque of about 156 Nm @ 4200 rpm. This new Hyundai Avante will provide a mileage of about 11 kmpl in the cities and about 14 kmpl in the highways. This new Hyundai Avante is also said to achieve a top-speed of about 185 kms in perfect running conditions.

This new Hyundai Avante, a luxurious sedan belonging to the D segment of the Indian automobile field provides Five-speed Manual Gearbox. This new Hyundai Avante includes McPherson Strut Type, Stabiliser Bar Suspension. It also provides a Disk Brake at the front and a Drum Brake at the rear.

SMOKY NAGATA POSTPONES STATESIDE VISIT

My car (the V12 Supra) was supposed to fly out of Narita Airport on Saturday evening. But because of the disaster, there are many problems with shipping now. So my car cannot make it to Houston until later. I am very sorry for this.

"As you all know, Japan was hit by a big earthquake a few days ago and my company is north of Tokyo. Closer to the quake site and nuclear power plant. Until today, I was packed and still scheduled to go to Houston. I did not want to cancel the trip. It has been a very difficult few days for me because I'm was very worried for my employees and colleagues. They are scared about radiation poisoing. I should stay here with them in at this time of much trouble.

News has just reached us that Mr. Top Secret himself, Kazuhiko "Smoky" Nagata, will not be able to make it to the Import Reactor, in Houston, as well as the Texas Mile this up coming weekend. I'll let Smoky explain: 

I was looking forward to coming back to Houston and meeting everyone again because of the warm welcome I had the last time. I was also looking forward to participating in Import Reactor and Texas mile. I am sad that I cannot make it now and disappointing everyone.

I explained the situation to John Leigh and he is very supporting. Please support him too.

When the problems with shipping is resolved, my car will go to Houston and I will come again to meet everyone.

VW SPEED MKII

The exterior has been kept clean with minor modifications. But then again this is not where this car excels. To find out what makes this car special we need to take a look under the bonnet.

Some owners build their Golf's purely for show but there are others that take a different route. This is one of those cars that I saw at the Midwinter Meeting that took this different route. The owner Chris is one of the people from the organization VW Speed. When he spotted me shooting at the event he recognized the Speedhunters stickers I have on my tripod. After a small introduction he told me I had to check out his car because it was a bit special.

This engine and the way how it looks really impressed me. The engine has been completely rebuilt after Chris sold the 1.8 8v G60 the car came with. The internal combustion is handled by a set of Carillo rods and Accralite forged pistons. It also has a Jenvey throttle body, 8 injectors with a custom fuel system and to control all these items Chris bought a DTA S80 ecu.

In the left bottom corner we see the airfilter housing that connects to the G-lader (scroll type supercharger) and together they come as one into the intake manifold. Inside the intake manifold there are four injectors and then it goes into the Jenvey throttle bodies that also has 4 injectors, so for each cylinder there are 2 injectors.

That is some serious engineering. In the end it results in an engine that delivers 322BHP and 360Nm.

To get all that power on the road Chris got himself Supro custom suspension with topmounts and replaced all the bushes with powerflex items.

These BBS RS 158 wheels measure 16" and are wrapped with 205/40/16 Toyo Proxes tires. The Brembo calipers are 4 pots and the rotor it clamps on is 305mm. At the rear Chris got himself a set of MKIV 4-motion calipers with 256 vented rotors.

So not all of the cars during these VW events are purely for show. This car has been built with one thing in mind and Chris executed it flawlessly.

I wanted to thank Chris for the opportunity to visit the event and I hope to be back next year.

Royal Enfield launched Classic 350 & Classic 500 in India

Royal Enfield have launched their new bike, Classic in India. For India Royal Enfield has launched the Classic in two models - Classic 350 & Classic 500. Royal Enfield Classic 350 is available in Red, Black & Silver where as Royal Enfield Classic 500 is available in Red, Black & Green. The Green shade is not available in Classic 350 & Silver shade is not available in Classic 500.

The Royal Enfield Classic 500 is powered by a 499cc, single cylinder engine which generates maximum power of 27.2 Bhp at 5250 rpm and peak torque of 41.3 Nm at 4000 rpm. And the Royal Enfield Classic 350 is powered by a 346cc engine from Thunderbird Twinspark which generates 19.8 Bhp of maximum power at 5250 rpm with 28 Nm of maximum torque.

Some of the main attractions of this new Royal Enfield Classic 350 as well as Classic 500 are that of the traditional looking front number plate, Classic style round headlamp, Fuel tank with post war graphics, Thigh pads and single saddle seat with springs and also the Body colored frame. What is really new in the Royal Enfield Classic is a UCE (Unit Construction Engine).

This new Royal Enfield Classic 350 as well as Classic 500 features Telescopic, Hydraulic damping Suspension at the front and Swing arm with adjustable Gas filled shock absorber Suspension at the rear. It also comes with a 280mm Front Disc brake and an Internal Expanding Rear Drum Brake. This new Royal Enfield Classic 350 as well as Classic 500 with a 5-speed Gearbox features Electronic Fuel Injection System in it.

MORE Q&A PLUS SOME NISSANS

I'm still trying to finish my Nissan showcase but perhaps it will have to wait just a bit longer.

Righto... well I've opened a bit of a can of worms here... it seems like while my recent FAQ post on SHIFT2 UNLEASHED has been greeting positively, it's also started the floodgates to a whole new wave of questions!

We just have to look at a few of your new questions as there were some very interesting points to answer.

These answers come direct  from the SMS team who were more than happy to take the time to give us some very detailed responses.

Let's get started!

In the original Shift, you'd only see maxed-out Murcielagos online, or in Pro Street, it was 69 Camaro's all over the drag leaderboards. The Works Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 was an absolute beast in Shift 1 and quite rightly so! Instead of nerfing it for the sequel though we've given it a ton of worthy competition to even the playing field with the inclusion of the GT1 cars and the ability to Works convert all other cars. I think you'll be surprised at all the different cars you'll be seeing on your SpeedWall.

Please also remember that Autolog will allow you to play asynchronously against your friends in the same car in a certain event, so you can compete directly with other cars. Of course, you could always set other criteria (such as performance class and vehicle type) to keep things changing.

Absolutely - one of the areas we focused on this year was "The Driver's Battle" which includes both build up of dirt and scratches on the car as it progresses through the race (including debris thrown up from the car you're drafting and bugs hitting the windscreen) and degradation of the track (skid marks, gravel/sand pulled onto the track, damage to armco, and marbles).

If you look closely inside the cockpit also you'll see working dials for oil temperature and pressure etc, and if you rev the engine you'll see various components like windscreen wipers and catch nets vibrating appropriately.

Crashing in SHIFT 2 is all about trying to recreate that feeling of dread that you'd feel in real life. In most driving games you can happily bounce off the walls without any fear but we tried to recreate the true disorientating and frightening experience that is crashing, with visual and audio effects. On top of that, in SHIFT 2, you can now choose to have the damage model fully enabled, with damage being taken by your car to any number of critical parts, including bodywork, suspension, drivetrain, engine and ripping your wheels off.

Also this year we've improved the in-air physics and damage models of the cars to ensure that not only do crashes/barrel rolls look visceral and heart-stopping but are authentic to how they then affect performance and handling. So yes, you might find your car pulling to the left, or if it's a really big crash, missing a tire with the drivetrain busted!

Yes weight is calculated like the real thing. Engine swaps do change the weight and weight distribution.

Will the physics be different when drifting?

You'll be pleased to hear that drift now use the same physics set as when racing. However, those of you who drift in real life know that it's very challenging to get the hang of this extreme type of car control. So we had to figure out a way to also make this style of driving accessable to the mainstream gamer audience while also staying true to the hardcore scene.

So the solution was add a power ramp for lower HP cars and as well as some extra input filters/drift aids for gamepads. This allows beginners driving low powered cars (the power adder fades out as you reach 500hp) using game pads some help to stabilize the cars at extreme drift angles. So there is a "pick up and play" aspect to drifting on game pads, but it still feels natural, flowing and controllable using real life drift techniques.

Please note the gamepad filtering is purely to compensate for the lack of Force Feed Back.. Steering wheel users get a raw, unfiltered experience. As with real life, it takes some practice to master.

The photo mode in Shift2 is significantly enhanced over what was available in Shift1. You can now access photo mode at any time during a career, quick race, a replay, and directly in the garage. The photomode controls allows you to cycle through all the various camera views (including trackside cams) and also allows you to toggle to a 'walk' mode where you can freely move around the car, rotate/pitch/roll/pan/zoom the camera, and set up the shot exactly as you want it.

Don't forget also that you can also share your photos (and replays) via Autolog.

All tuning affects the car's handling as it does in real life and this time round we're going into far more detail than there was in Shift 1... installing new parts on your car will unlock new tuning options and you can test out changes on the track using our new Live Tuning option. Once you're happy with the setup you can then save it to either a specific track or a group of tracks that are similar (eg.. all Oval tracks or all Drift tracks).

We've also included a live telemetry readout that details friction, g-forces, and tire temperature/suspension data so you can see your handling and performance in real time.

There is no option to filter by a specific handling mode, but you can now filter by camera view. So if you want to ensure everyone is driving from helmet cam the option is available.

Matchmaking incorporates a number of criteria but always tries to connect you with players of a similar Driver Level to your own with good connection speeds. You can keep track of your Online Wins/Losses, Online Play Time and your Driver Level from within the Autolog Driver Profile tab.

Fans will also be pleased to hear too that we've included two new matchmaking rules to address feedback we heard back from you guys on Shift 1 that aggressive players were ruining your experience by constantly trading paint or crashing into you on the first corner...



Although we've removed visibility of Aggression vs Precision from the game, we still monitor it under the hood and now use it when matchmaking. This means that if you drive well, you'll be matched up against other similar guys. The second is your Disconnect % - ie.. if you're a bit of a sore loser and pull the cable out of your machine when you're not winning then you're gradually gonna find it harder to play with those that are there to genuinely have a good time on the track.

Photos on PC are taken at the resolution you play at (eg.. 1600x1200) so make great desktop wallpapers! Photos on console are 720p, and all can be shared via your Autolog Gallery

Yes, we have a deferred rendering engine which supports 4xMSAA and up to 16 x anisotropic texture filtering.

Garage Slots have been removed in Shift 2 Unleashed so you can comfortably fit one of every car in now. It's also possible to have several versions of the same car model in your garage now with SHIFT2 UNLEASHED.

Ok then. I wanted to show you more Nissans! First off, some people seem to be extremely concerned about rear wing deletes so I thought I'd build up this version of the S13 to show you.

The yellow color was partially inspired by one the C's Garage S13s BTW.

Since this car started life as an USDM spec machine, we've offered the option to swap in a SR20DET.

BTW Mark Arcenal from Fatlace was up in Canada last week visiting our studio and we built up this particular S13 together. He seemed to like the combo of the small diameter Equips on the S-Chassis with the flared arches.

Here's the Works version of the S13.

I painted it blue in honour of the first IMSA GTU S13 racing machines from the early 1990s.

This is definitely a circuit racing set up.

A quick look at the Work spec S13's cockpit setup.

Interestingly the S14A in game started life as a UK spec RHD 200SX. Look ma no rear wing!

The S15 obviously is RHD.

I started out styling the car with the intention of honouring both the D1GP Taniguchi S15 and the original orange look of Phil Morrison's Driftworks machine.

I then tried a sticker bomb approach... just to see if it could be done.

I then settled on this more VIPish set up by bolting on a set of Weds Kranze Bazreias.

Engine swap-wise the S15 upgrades to a RB26 sourced from the R34. While it makes the car more nose-heavy, you can have a great time making big smoke with this setup.

Here's the Works kit for the S15.

I styled the car to be slightly inspired by the Scorch Racing time attack S15.

The upgrade package also has a little bit in common with the old GT300 S15 racing cars, although gobs more power!

The G35 also gets the RB26 swap... here's a peek at the works kit.

We elected to allow the V8 engine from the Sumo Power GT1 machines to be shoehorned into the 350Z. This really changes the character of the car I have to say!... that Works kit is looking ace too.

The 370Z also gets the Nissan V8 too which should make it a great drifter.

You can also strap turbos if you want a truly insane race or drift experience... let's see how many of you go for this setup in your Autolog drift battles.

The regular R35 GT-R is a USDM spec machine and therefore is LHD.

Interestingly though, the Spec V is RHD. I'm not sure why SMS did this! Both cars have different works kits setups too.

One of the ultimate driving experiences in the game has to be piloting the Sumo Power GT1 spec GT-R. It's quite a beast of a car.

And is a machine I repeatedly return to. It's truly epic!

Ok guys. I'm flying off to New Zealand today for some much needed R&R so you won't be hearing from me for a few weeks. I hope you've enjoyed learning a little bit about what goes on behind the scenes in a video game production, especially a project which has been directly influenced by you, the Speedhunters readers. I've poured my heart and soul into SHIFT2 UNLEASHED and a sincerely hope you enjoy the end product!
